Middle Caicos

Once known as “Grand Caicos”, this is the largest island in the Turks and Caicos chain.  The island is connected to North Caicos by a mile long causeway.  The main settlements in Middle Caicos are Conch Bar and Bambarra.

The sparsely populated island (reportedly fewer than 700 residents) is host to the Caribbean’s largest cave system, the impressive non-submerged Conch Bar Caves.  Settled by the Lucayan Indians, excavations of the caves speak to the history of the island. Home to sisal industry in the past, native traditions of boat building, basket weaving, bush medicine are alive and well.

Middle Caicos was once the home of agriculture in the Turks and Caicos, and the overgrown ruins of extensive cotton and sisal plantations can still be explored today. With more rainfall than Provo, several local farms continue to produce an abundant supply of tomatoes, peppers, melons, bananas, sugar cane, and papaya.

The north coast of the island offers secluded beaches and rugged ocean cliffs. The spectacular Mudjin Harbour Beach is one of the most photographed places in the TCI.
